Win a Free SDR Receiver Package!
AmateurRadio.com & NooElec have teamed up to give away
SDR (Software Defined Radio) receiver packages to TEN hams!
If you haven’t had the chance to play with an SDR receiver, here’s your chance! Using freely available software (SDRSharp, HDSDR), a modest antenna, and an inexpensive USB SDR dongle (the NESDR Mini or NESDR Nano), you can tune from 25 MHz – 1750 MHz right from your PC.
If you want to listen to MF/HF, just add the inline Ham It Up upconverter to tune down as low as 500 kHz. There’s even an Android app (SDR Touch) that allows you to plug these USB SDRs into your tablet (Android 4.0+, must support USB OTG)!
These little USB SDR receivers are amazing and extremely affordable (under $20). They are a lot of fun to play with!

It’s truly amazing how simple the electronic part of these receivers is, depending more on the power of the PC to do the work! We live in amazing times, technologically. To win one of these packages to play with would be incredible! Best of luck to all.
Always wanted to venture into SDR. Even purchased a Rickmite once but resold it before I had the chance to build it

what a great giveaway. Good Luck to all 73s
Very cool idea! I’ve never played around with SDR before. I guess if you pick me I’ll have to buy a PC and experiment!
73’s and Happy Holidays to all.
The RTL2820 based dongles make awesome and inexpensive front ends for SDR work. I already have a dongle with an E4000 tuner, but don’t have all the extra accessories, so I am yet to play on HF or MF. The software currently available performs amazingly well – from monitoring a 1 or 2 MHz wide slab of spectrum to high quality recordings of FM stereo broadcasts for podcasting, these are a versatile device.
SDR is definitely the future of ham radio, and has never been easier. Applications are limited by one’s imagination and the ability of someone to write the code. Imagine using the SDR dongle to monitor a band that’s open, being able to click on a spike and having your main (conventional) rig tune to that frequency and mode ready to transmit, using CAT commands from the SDR software, for instance.
Whoever wins the prizes is going to love them.
WOW … Hope Santa knows what I want…
Great way to get started in SDR. Thanks!
Happy Holidays! (Would be even happier being a winner!)
One can’t have enough SDR’s lying around.
I’m in! Thanks!
Thanks, A great opportunity to try out some new (to me) technology.
Count me in! Glad to see the prices of these devices dropping.
SDR’s have opened up a fun new set of affordable receiving & test gear options. They have also challenged Hams to match them with tiny frequency-versatile transmitters (micro-QRP & QRP).
This would open up a whole other facet of Amateur Radio for me, that’s for sure!
Looks good.
I would love to win that radio at less some will win it that for sure.
I know I have never won any in my life time but I know someone will have a very nice Christman present.

Homepage: http://lea.hamradio.si/~db8co
see in particular: http://lea.hamradio.si/~db8co/SSST/ieice-HP.html (in particular Figs. 17 – 19)
This describes a method of superfast acquisition of time and frequency of a spread
spectrum signal. Obviously usable for GNSS units to make them acquire satelltes in milliseconds. The presentation was held in Nagoya in Fall 2001. This was 12 years ago –
enough time to percolate into the relevant industry so that near instant satellite
acquisition for GNSS units should be commonplace by now. Just that it isn’t – despite
the fact that there is a proof of concept implementation on my site as well. So much
for “innovation in that industry. And yes, there are no patents on this – being a
mathematical method it is not patentable in the EU.
However, thanks to rtl-sdr and fast computerboards ( beaglebone, Olinuxino….. )
we now can implement that ourselves bypassing the industry……

I think it would be fun to run one of these low-cost SDRs alongside my Flex.
How about something for the transmit side? Does that become a bit more of an issue with FCC certification?
Santa-Defined Radio (SDR) is really works?
Hi! 73&GL!
MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!
Thanks and 73!
Doug
I hope I win!
I’m in 🙂
What a great idea. Even tho’ I’m 73 years old — I still like to learn new things and would love having a SDR receiver. 73 es Thanks for the opportunity. Randy K4LJA in Monroe, Louisiana
Hi
This is a great site and its the first time I have found it.
I have book marked it for regular viewing.
I have already had a look around and its a great site
Well done
Cheers Gary ZL3SV
Fantastic, thanks for the gifts we can look forward to Christmas, HI!
Thanks for the chance. Happy Santa.
From the looks of the long range forecast for my area it will be a slow winter for golf and a good winter to stay in the Ham Shack and learn some of the new technology
Great prizes 🙂
Seeing the simplicity of a SDR radio reminds me of my first home built radio, a Knight-Kit Span Master. What a great way to experiment with a radio, 21st Century style.
Happy New Gear! 😉
73 to all!
Might as well sign up for this.
Have been wanting to play with SDR for a while now, and would love to win the hardware to do it.
I would love to get a package like this to use with my Boy Scout troop. Thanks for doing this for the amateur radio community. 73s!
Sdr seems to be the WAY! Merry Christmas 2013
This looks like a great way to kick into the SDR realm of ham radio! 73s and thanks for the opportunity!
I would love to try SDR and hope I win some kit

I want to learn SDR
Own a RTLSDR and downconverter since couple of weeks. A great and affordable way to get a ready-to-use complementary receiver…
Have also finally found a way to monitor ADSB, whereas prices for classic solutions were to expensive for me.
For sure, I already Know how I would use a fresh-won RTLSDR : this would become an HF reversebeacon monitoring device !
73 de F5MFO
SDR dongles are definitely the future – remember CRT panoramic adaptors??
73 de andy g0sfj
These sound like fun! Use it for Funcube!
Whole world through SDR.
It’s great that these devices are becoming so popular; this really gives amateur radio the ability to compete via software with commercial offerings. Thanks for the contest!
Many uses exist for these. During last months been testing if RTL-SDR stick is suitable to receive meteor echoes in the region 49.75Mhz analog TV pilots. And saving waterfall display periodically. Waiting for the Geminids here 🙂
Awesome, would love to have one of these! Thanks for the contest/offer, Cheers and 73!
Awesome Christmas present!
Nowadays the world communicates through analogical and digital signals. The SDR is best example for us.
I’d love to try this. Being young it’s also a great way to get some kit. Hf transceivers can be extremely expensive so even just listening is cool!
The giveaway sounds great.
neat
SDR is definitely the way to go. One day all radios will be made this way!
The only thing better then a contest, is an Amateur Radio contest!
I’ve been wanting to try this out with my tablet for the last 6 months

These things are so cool! I want to try the upconverter… 🙂
Professor Douglas Hartree, who had built the first differential analyzers in England and had more experience in using these very specialized computers than anyone else, said in 1951, that, in his opinion, all the calculations that would ever be needed in this country could be done on the three digital computers which were then being built—one in Cambridge, one in Teddington, and one in Manchester. No one else, he said, would ever need machines of their own, or would be able to afford to buy them.
I wish he could see today’s computers and SDR.
Wow, this would be a great start to a shack! Plus a good intro to general privileges!
This is a great opportunity to experiment with SDR. I am looking forward to trying it!

I’ve been working with SDR’s for 5 years now. It is amazing what can be heard and what can be done with just a small piece of hardware and some software. Things have come a long way in a short time!
Absolutely fantastic to follow the advances in communications.
Been waiting for the opportunity to play with SDR…maybe this will be my lucky day!
With the price of new equipment, this is a nice way getting started.
Looks like a interesting project to get hams back to building/experimenting and innovating.

sdr receivers very good specially for new commers and specially young guys those who have internet facility . we can create more interest in ham radio specially young generation. my wish is to create 1,00,000 hams in India. if it is successful these children can make use of it with low cost .
i hope it will be great fun
sdr receivers are exciting stuff and SDR are the futur but i never tried it !
Thanks for the opportunity.
I enjoy using rtl-sdr. Running LINUX, and quite enjoyable.
It would sure be nice to own the upconverter, to listen to the HF Bands, and brush up on my CW skills.
I am planning on building a SOFTROCK RXTX kit, and running a full fledged SDR station. Look for me in the future, running either cw or digital modes QRP on 40, 30, 20 meters. Probably by May 2014.

A tiny gadget but tons of fun. GL&73´s for all.
New technology of 21st century to everyone! 73 from Siberia.
Fabulous idea on helping to spread this technology.
How about something similar to help stimulate the young which seem to be more prevalent in the Maker and robotic groups or schools with an active and progressive Amateur or Maker clubs or interest in launching and tracking high altitude balloons.
cheers,
I hope to win the Up Converter!!! I need it for my FTDX3000 PANADAPTER!!
Looking into CDR. This should be good!

All sounds technical ,if i win anything can you send some paracetamol as well….
Great products!
I love rtl-sdr use it all the time
Thanks for doing this, Nooelec and amateurradio.com! Good luck everyone!
The more I experiment with SDRs, the more amazing the technology becomes (at least to me). Even more amazing is the performance/price ratio!
should be fun …
Software defined radio is definitely the next stage in radio technology, and I can’t wait to experiment
SDR sounds like a lot of fun. This should realy catch on. Good luck.
Bill WA2NGU.
It is fine!
I’d love to get a SDR so that I could share the virtues of this technology with my local Ham community!

I’ve been interested in the Ham-it-up up. Great giveaway!
Lots of comments. What are my odds?
HI to all! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! What a great contest! Love my radio’s but I think SDR is here to stay!
Awesome!
SDR is a lot of fun. The one I ordered came with a crippled tuner, so can’t hit anything above 900mhz. Would love to win a better quality one!
SDR the way of the future! You end up hearing exactly what went into the microphone without all the filter artefacts. Simply perfect…HIHI SDR rules!
Would be nice to have a little SDR box to play with over my Christmas vacation when the kids are playing with their toys.
Gary
Looks to be great fun. Would love to try!
Very cool stuff. Want one!
I snagged one recently, but whooooowee I could do with the big kit!
*fingers crossed*
SDR is sweet.
I’ve been looking at these things for a while and now its time to get one.
Really like the upconverter!
Would be fantastic to win. Here’s hoping!

That is a lot of entries.
will look at the NooElec offerings
Very Interesting…
GOOD addition to the basic EQUIPMENT hams
SDR is a great project with lots of possible and interesting uses. To all involved, keep up the good work!
Good Idea Ham It Up upconverter at 125 MHz instead of 100 MHz….
Would love the chance to experiment with sdr , the way forward , sdr radio with optional buttons and knobs for us oldies would be the ultimate.
Hi,
I have the Ham it Up already in combination with a Funcube dongle which works pretty well.
Interested in something with a bit wider bandwidth.
Will definitely be taking a look at some of the new products.
Cheers,
B
Would love to find one of these little devils in my christmas pudding!
Nice stuff, I always wanted to try SDR!
Nice giveaway idea!
Nooelec stuff looks neat. Would be a great holiday present 🙂
WOW… I heard of this wonderful gadget called but never reach it.
SDR is the future and needs to be improved and spread among the young enthusiasts.
I would love to win one of those prizes!
Love to have one of these!
Wish we had them years ago!
Thanks for the opportunity!
73,

Great solution, I like that!
i am enthousiast with sdr for the reception of 1090 Mhz planes identification
Regards .
I have been wanting to try SDR for some time now, this looks great!
Would definitely like to try these for satellite telemetry down links.
Yay SDR!
Thanks for the giveaways!
Solid state, cool stuff 😉
These look very interesting, and I can think of several experiments I’d like to try with them.
I`m writting to St Clause email now 😉
Great work. I’ll try to use for radioastronomy and x-band converter.
I have been researching SDR, I would like to get one.
Thank you very much for your ads,
best regards,
Joe
Good luck folks!
Every ham should have more than one of TT these great dongles.
i recently purchased an SDR based handheld, i am surprised at the performance for its size. This setup is pretty interesting, something I would like to try out. Thanks and good luck to everyone.
I would love to try one of these SDR dongles on the new AO-73 ham satellite. Thanks, Ken N0HRL
Good luck!
Great giveaway!
SDRs seem like a neat way to get started with radio, I’m in for this contest.
Great SDR giveaway!
Nice giveaway !!!!
I never used a SDR before. I’m very curious about it.
Good SDR!
Awesome info! Thanks and wish me the best. I would love to win one of these packages…
SDR is an interesting development in Amateur Radio.
SDR is the current radio technology.
SDR is the future of ham gear, I might as well learn about it!
A great way to start working with SDR technology.
good for start exploring SDR….
I am amazed at how the SDR technology is progressing and how inexpensive it is becoming. Thanks for the informative article.
I recently discovered the amateurradio.com web site and have enjoyed reading the articles and posts. I am also looking forward to learning more about SDR Radios.
SDR is one of the most exciting developments I have seen in ham radio in the last 30 years!
Very grateful for opportunity to subscribe. Look forward with INTEREST!!!
I have been playing with a friends RTL dongle to track planes on 1090 Mhz and I would love to win one of these!!!
It appears to be a nice SDR on the cheap. The sound is very clear in the demo. It will be worth trying.
SDR is great for experimenting!
73′
A great project. Hope to see more items like this using this great little sdr.
sounds like fun!
Gotten really into SDR again in the past couple months. This would be really cool.
Well what a coincidence I was just about to start up a project in SDR with the Raspberry PI !
Would love to try SDR in HF ! Even a VHF-only SDR would make my day!
I have been meaning to look into this for some months now – just what I need.
SDR is great and cheap entrance to SWL and Ham.
I would love to try this out.
Sounds like a lot of fun. I will most likely buy the package just to play with it. I bought a Knight kit Scanmaster regenerative receiver while in high school and spent countless hours listening to all the shortwave stations. It will be interesting to compare the little SDR to my Kenwood and Yaesu transceivers.
Hope i win.
hey I’ve never played with such a SDR radio. this had been great fun to have tested one.
Pick Me SDR is cool!
I love SDR!!! Pick Me.
Very interesting stuff, lots of possibilities!
I would like for you to find a young ham (I’m 60) and give them one of these. I have one already and I think that they are fun to use. Don’t think that this is the type of comment you wanted but it’s how i feel.
Looks like Christmas to me 🙂
SDR is way cool – I’ve had a little dabble with it but the dongle I bought wasn’t the best – this combination of the upconverter and NESDR mini receiver looks like a much better way to get in to SDR.
NooElec is a great guy to deal with. And the Hamitup convertor works well.
If you are a Ham you really need to buy these from him. SDR is the wave of the future. Only shame is the lack of Linux support for SDR# so you really need a cheap windows laptop. What are you waiting for? Just do it.
73
Richard
Always wanted to try SDR! Maybe I will get lucky this time?
great initiative!
thanks
Would love to explore SDR!
Hmmm,I think these sweepstakes are getting popular!
I have never operated an SDR system. My HF rig is an older Kenwood TS430S that works great but with none of the modern bells and whistles. Having the chance to play with an SDR system would be interesting and fun.
I’ve been thinking about trying one of these with a Raspberry Pi and touchscreen to see if I could get a handheld SDR.
Getting HF on the rtl_sdr would really put its abilities to good use – imagine panoramic waterfalls of CW and multiple parallel decoding of RTTY/BPSK31.
I don’t have an HF receiver – but I do have a laptop and with this combo I wouldn’t have to bug Dad to borrow his rig!
Remarkable device. It would be desirable to listen.
Oh man!! SDR are the best
Nice giveaway! This looks like fun.
This appears to be an impressive state-of-the art product that I’d really like to add to my shack.
Awesome stuff, I’d love to win!
YES!Would be great to win one of those !!
Every success in the draw, 73!
Good luck to all! Thanks!
73!
Would be a great intro to SDR, for myself and my kids.
i am very keen to continue with SDR as l believe that is the way technology is heading,to this end am changing to a sdr receiving system as finance permits
Cheers all and many thanks to the suppliers.

SDR technology enables standard devices and make these devices unique software. Thus the end user gets a big advantage because of the possibility of using multi-standard mobile stations , where switching from one standard to the other occurs automatically without the participation of the latter. Work on SDR transceiver very nice and comfortable . All control computer mouse . See the whole spectrum and simply specifying the program instantly tunable filter on interesting station. Very quickly and clearly . After working on the SDR, is already working on an ordinary something is missing – the visual information about the situation on the range. However, this is the future . Indeed , it’s interesting to live in the future when each user already has a SDR radio . And while developers only wish success in their difficult task and be patient. 73!
This is my comment 🙂
Very nice to find this post related to SDR because although I´ve been long time been interested I thought these devices were much expensive.
For example: I have not 6 meters receiving capability, except for a hand held scanner. It would be great to experiment with these little devices.
Tank you. 73 de EA4BL.
Merry Xmas all.
i love amateur radio
Get !

SDR is good radio!
This is my “go to” ham radio page and now this!
73 de Tom, AB9NZ
SDR on VHF is cool, HF with upconvert would be fun
This is a great portable way to demostrate ham radio using common technology that is recognized publicly. The SDR display makes for a great talking point when showing to none technical people.
Nice kit to enter the SDR world!
SDR is fantastic tool for QSO.
SDR is useful thing for ham radio users
Would be nice to win one of those. Maybe I will be lucky.
I have just been interested in this stuff and would love to have a setup like this…. working on making a discone antenna kit for everyone as soon as I can get my 3d printer going …
Would love to try this out!
Looks like some nice products.
Thanks for the opportunity to win a SDR with HF upconverter!
Unfair. The email’s that sent ius to this page said nothing about having to be a licensed amateur radio operator, but the products to be awarded seem top be reasonable if not pretty good overall.
I hope I win, I need this for my serious SWL listening hobby.
Will be a great to have it in my shack! Thanks for the opportunity!
73 IW2MVI
These are great little units–the winner will have a lot of fun!
Looks like some fun for these cold winter months!
This is what I need to get through the long New England winter.
Looks like a fun way to incorporate a PC with Ham Radio
The dongles are actually very sensitive, and my ver 1 converter works fine on HF.
Great idea!
Ideal to start SDR radio amateur adventure.
73 🙂
SDR is an exciting future for HAM radio!
Thanks in advance. 🙂

Ideal to the hearing “The Disco Palace” in DRM on 12.115MHz.
Merry Christmas And Happy new year 2014…!!!!
A nice Holiday treat!
I’m in. Fingers crossed. 73
Great website. Merry Christmas
Would like to try SDR, another great addition to our hobby.
been a ham for a year and wanting to learn as much as I can and would like to try this to see what it’s all about 73’s

Would love to update my home station with 21st century SDR equipment!
Amazing technology! Thanks for the opportunity to learn about it!
Happy Holidays!
Sure why not!
Hello! I wish you success in business, wealth. With the upcoming Christmas holidays. 73!
Looks like a great wintertime project! The possibilities are astounding!
I have one of these and could certainly use more. Just set up a dedicated ADS-B receiver this weekend for testing using the 2382 dongle.
Thanks for offering these via a draw for the community, much appreciated.
Dear Santa,
SDR for me, please!
This would be a very exciting surprise for Christmas. One of these items has been on my gift wish list and its presence simply mystifies my friends and family looking to get me the “one” special gift this year.
Thank you for this exciting opportunity. Merry Christmas to one and all and wishes that Santa brings one of the prize packages to our home this Christmas!
These dongles are the best thing for radio monitoring. I have been scanning since 1988 and this is a huge leap forward in capability on a budget.
Been waiting to try SDR
I wouldn’t mind the converter, maybe the odds will be in my favour.
I would love to win one of these packages!
Very nice! Thanks!
Well, I’m crossing my fingers, and hoping to win. This would be very fun to play with.
This is awesome. Have been thinking about even getting one of those SDR TXs, but never got around to really do it.
Happy Holidays!
Very interesting a product, it is necessary to get
Could really use the Ham it Up upconverter!
Absolutely terrific – these are a great educational tool as well. Thanks for the opportunity to win one of these !!!
very interesting
Pick me PLEASE!! i finally got a computer that can a SDR.
I love me some sdr. Thanks!
This sort of gear is probably the greatest amount of fun for the least amount of money in the entire history of radio tinkerers. I already have a Ham It Up upconverter, and it performs great. Far superior to the upconverter setup I was using previously, just an SBL-1 and a canned clock osc.
I have been looking to build a SDR setup for some time. It would have many uses.
Nice article, it would be tremendous if one of the prizes came to Scotland !
73 John
It would be nice to build keep an old man busy
This sounds like a lot of fun.
It would be awesome to have a sdr receiver like that.
I am a amateurradiolistner.
No License, not jet.
This SDR receiver should be in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

I have all of the SDR setup mentioned in this entry invitation message and I just love it.
It was hard to believe just how well it worked when I set it up and turned it on.
I use a MFJ T/R switch with my old Icom 728 and the HamItUp HF converter. It compares with the SDR-IQ (which I own) in ease of use and operational abilities.
It’s very educational and informative doing side by side comparisons with some of the top of the line transceivers including the Yaesu 9000 and others. Watching the little Hamitup connected to a dongle hearing as good as or better than $8,000 receivers is amazing and has upset more than one fellow I have observed.
And lets see now, I have HOW MUCH invested? That Really blows them away.
The one big complaint I hear from others is the lack of “hands on controls”
I have partially addressed this on my setup by using an after market stand alone VFO that simply plugs into the USB port on the PC. It has plenty of knobs and buttons that are programmable enough to practically duplicate the controls on the bigger transceivers.
Including all the item i have listed above I have about $325.00 and that is really much more than I needed to spend.
I will let you know where to send my new SDR to as soon as you announce the winners. LOL!
73,
Curt Easterbrook K7ETF (EasyToForget)

Nice grouping there… I hope you have something setup to feed all the comment authors into a list for the random draw. This could take a while by hand! 8^)

Good deal! SDR is the way to go.
digital is the way of the future
Cool holiday drawing! I just got my Tech ticket a few months ago and am having fun with the new hobby. Although I can’t do much on the HF frequencies (YET) I would love to be able to listen to them. I just can’t afford any kind of HF rig right now. Winning this drawing would be a great way to do that while I’m working on getting my General ticket and later the Extra ticket. Win or not this is on my wishlist.
Nice idea!
May be I’ll switch to SDR?
73, Yuri

Just what I need! A new Ham Radio hobby that is exciting AND economical…
I wanna win!
I bought the dongle and the ham it up upverter. It is a great experience to see how much SDR radio can be had for so little cash outlay.
I started building SDR radios on reading articles produced by YU1LM.
Everything I produced worked but cannot hold a candle to the right Terratec dongle and an upverter.

This would be fun to play with. Thanks
Count me in
Looks like frat fun. Would love to try SDR. Thanks!
greatest thing since fried rice. it is amazing what a person can do with a small investment of money and time. simple to use yet in can be used in so many different ways in the hobby. one way to use it would be as a second receiver to find that rare dx, weak signal station. i am sure i would be buying several for listening and learning about nooelec and ham it up sdr radio. i am going to pass on what i learned so far about this amazing piece of technology to my son and club members.
I hope I get … have no radio 🙂
These SDR receivers would be ideal as a low-cost and easy-to-use RF spectrum analyser. Just the ticket for evaluating homebrew transmitting equipment!
Looking good!

Hi All. I would love one of these. Would be a very good addition to the shack’s capabilities.
This is really a GREAT opportunity to get the youth of today involved in Amateur Radio! They can see the latest technological devices being utilized for HAM radio and “see” the signals they are “hearing”! I’m very excited to become a part of this and start sparking the imaginations of the “younger” generation! If I win, this will be a fabulous teaching aid!
SDR radios are really fun ways to play with amateur radio. Let’s kick off the holidays in style with one of these units!
It would be great to use this nice, cheap and simple SDR.
I bought a few dongles in the past and have tried to get them to work without much luck but at least I know what to look out for. I would be a happy radiohead were I to win a prize. 🙂
This seems to be the direction radios are turning so these SDR dongles would be a good way to get your feet wet.
I’d would like the opportunity to try on
