Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Aug 17 0158 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 – 16 August 2020

Solar activity was at very low levels on 10-14 and 16 Aug. Low levels were observed on 15 Aug due to a C2 flare from Region 2770 (N23, L=24, class/area Cso/70 on 07 Aug.

Coronal dimming near S30E30 was observed in GOES-16 SUVI 195 imagery around 16/1700 UTC. An associated CME signature was observed in LASCO C2 imagery at 16/1812 UTC and in STEREO-A COR2 coronagraph imagery beginning at 16/1824 UTC. Analysis of this event remains underway at the time of this writing. No other Earth-directed CME activity was detected during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at high levels on 10-11 Aug due to coronal hole high speed stream influence. The maximum flux of the period was 2,950 pfu observed at 10/1550 UTC. Normal to moderate levels were observed on 12-16 Aug.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels throughout the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 17 August – 12 September 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 01-07 Sep due to recurrent coronal hole high speed stream influence. Normal to moderate levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be unsettled to active on 30 Aug, unsettled on 19-20 Aug and 29, 31 Aug-all due to recurrent coronal hole high speed stream influence. Quiet levels are expected for the remainder of the outlook period.

Check Out My New SDRplay RSPdx Software-Defined Radio Receiver – Live!

My new SDRplay RSPdx software-defined radio receiver is live, via http://www.sdrspace.com/Version-3, using the SDR Console software (Version 3).

The receivers are online whenever I am not transmitting and when there are no local thunderstorms.

Antenna Port A is a wire antenna (100′), while Antenna Port B is a VHF/UHF discone. Both have an AM Broadcast band reject filter, reducing local AM Broadcast signals by about 30 to 40 dB. I need to use these because the very close KLIN transmitting tower is just miles away and those signals overwhelm the receiver. When I use the signal filters, the local AM Broadcasting signals no longer overwhelm the receiver.

To use my receiver:

Install the latest version of SDR-Console which can be downloaded from https://www.sdr-radio.com/download

Install SDR Console according to the directions given. Once you have the software installed, you will want to add my server.

It takes a little to get familiar with the software, but there are online FAQs on how to begin.

My server is known as, ‘0 NW7US‘ — it will be online when I am not using my antenna systems for transmitting. It will be offline during thunderstorms, or during times when I must use the systems for transmitting.

Software-defined radio is a great way to hear all sorts of communications, from local AM broadcast stations, FM stations, VHF Air Traffic, to shortwave radio stations including amateur radio HF communications.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Aug 10 0329 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 – 09 August 2020

Solar activity was at very low levels on 03-07 and 09 Aug. Low levels were reached on 08 Aug as Region 2770 (N23, L=023, class/area Cso/070 on 06 Aug) produced an isolated C1/Sn flare at 08/0349 UTC. This was the first C-class flare observed since 29 May. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at moderate to high levels. Moderate levels were observed on 03-04 Aug. High levels were observed on 05-09 Aug due to coronal hole high speed stream (CH HSS) influence. The maximum flux of the period was 2,815 pfu observed at 05/1630 UTC.

Geomagnetic field activity ranged from quiet to active levels. The period began with the onset of a positive polarity CH HSS. Total field reached 10 nT at the beginning of the period and solar wind speed reached a maximum of 754 km/s at 04/0516 UTC. By early on 05 Aug, solar wind speed was in decline and nominal background levels returned by 07 Aug. The geomagnetic field responded with quiet to active levels on 03-04 Aug and quiet conditions on 05-09 Aug.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 10 August – 05 September 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low levels with a slight chance for isolated C-class flares through 15 Aug. Very low levels are expected for the rest of the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to reach high levels on 10-11 Aug and again on 01-05 Sep due to CH HSS influence.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be reach unsettled levels on 29-31 Aug with active levels likely on 30 Aug due to recurrent CH HSS effects.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Aug 03 0354 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July – 02 August 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. Three spotted regions populated the disk at various times during the summary period. Region 2767 (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) maintained an H-type configuration through the period and was quiet and stable. Region 2768 (N26, L=111, class/area Hsx/020 on 30 Jul) formed on the disk on 28 Jul and decayed to plage by 02 Aug. It was quiet and stable. Region 2769 (N26, L=059, class/area Axx/010 on 02 Aug) quietly rotated onto the disk.

An eruptive prominence was observed off the SE limb about midday on 31 Jul. A slow-moving CME was subsequently observed, but was determined to not have an Earth-directed component. No other CMEs or activity of note was observed during the summary period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels through the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels through midday on 02 Aug when unsettled activity was observed due to positive polarity CH HSS influence. Solar wind observations indicated nominal conditions through about 02/0600 UTC when a CIR, in advance of a positive polalarity CH HSS, became evident in the data. Wind speeds increased from about 310 km/s to near 530 km/s, total field increased to 12 nT and the Bz component reached -10 nT. The geomagnetic field reacted with mostly unsettled conditions.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 03 August – 29 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be at very low levels throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be at unsettled to active levels through 03 Aug with a chance for G1 (Minor) geomagnetic storm levels due to recurrent CH HSS effects. Quiet to unsettled levels are expected on 04 Aug as HSS effects persist. Unsettled levels are expected once again on 29 Aug. Quiet levels are expected to prevail for the remainder of the period, 05-28 Aug.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Jul 27 0132 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 – 26 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. New Region 2767 (S21, L=200, class/area Hsx/120 on 26 Jul) rotated onto the disk on 21 Jul, but was quiet and stable. A slow-moving, partial halo CME was detected in coronagraph imagery in the NE quadrantat at about 19/1135 UTC. Subsequent model analysis indicated an Earth-directed component would likely become geoeffective on 24-25 Jul. No other CME activity was detected during the period.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity was at quiet levels 20-23 Jul. Field conditions reached unsettled to active levels on 24-25 Jul due to effects from the 19 Jul CME. A return to quiet conditions was observed on 26 Jul. Solar wind parameters reflected enhanced conditions on 24-25 Jul as a result of CME effects. Solar wind speeds increased from approximately 300 km/s to near 415 km/s. Total field peaked at 11 nT while the Bz component dropped south to -10 nT. Density levels increased to 28 particles/cc. Ambient solar wind parameters were present on 20-23 Jul and 26 Jul.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 27 July – 22 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be at normal to moderate levels thoughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 28-29 Jul due to a negative polarity CH HSS. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the outlook period.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 – 19 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the period. No active regions with sunspots were observed over the past week. The passage of a slow-moving CME from 08 Jul was observed on 13-14 Jul. Near the end of the period, a faint, slow-moving CME was observed off the western limb in STEREO-A imagery beginning at around 19/0524 UTC. Analysis of this event remains underway at the time of this writing.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal-to-moderate levels throughout the period.

Geomagnetic field activity reached active levels between 13/0000-0900 UTC due to a combination of positive polarity CH HSS and CME (08 Jul) effects. Quiet to unsettled conditions were observed on 13 Jul. Quiet conditions were observed throughout the remainder of the period.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 20 July – 15 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low throughout the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to be normal-to-moderate throughout the outlook period.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to be quiet to unsettled on 23-24 Jul and 31 Jul-01 Aug. Quiet conditions are expected to prevail throughout the rest of the period.

Here is this week’s space weather and geophysical report, issued 2020 Jul 13 0246 UTC.

Highlights of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 06 – 12 July 2020

Solar activity was very low throughout the summary period. Region 2766 (N05, L=122, class/area Bxo/010 on 10 Jul) was the only spotted region and decayed to plage by 11 Jul.

A filament eruption near S29W18 produced a faint, slow-moving CME signature in LASCO/SOHO C2 imagery beginning at 09/0724 UTC. Analysis and modeling of the event suggested a possible glancing blow from the CME around 14 Jul.

No proton events were observed at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit was at normal to moderate levels throughout the summary period.

Geomagnetic field activity was quiet. No significant periods of southward Bz were observed.

Forecast of Solar and Geomagnetic Activity 13 July – 08 August 2020

Solar activity is expected to be very low over the outlook period.

No proton events are expected at geosynchronous orbit.

The greater than 2 MeV electron flux at geosynchronous orbit is expected to continue at normal to moderate levels.

Geomagnetic field activity is expected to range from quiet to active levels. Unsettled conditions are likely on 13 Jul and 31 Jul – 01 Aug in response to coronal hole influence. Active conditions are likely on 14 Jul due to the anticipated arrival of a slow-moving transient that left the Sun on 09 Jul. The remainder of the outlook period is expected to be at quiet levels under a nominal solar wind environment.
