Your Opinion, Please (first of several)

I am asking for opinions on audio, in my videos. I am in the process of choosing the better of several mics. Right now, I have two comparisons. One is a lapel mic. One is a headset boom mic.

Your opinion is appreciated on the best of two microphones used in upcoming videos I hope to create on my channel on YouTube ( https://YouTube.com/NW7US ), during those times when I want to vlog from my moving vehicle.

I am assessing several things: background noise level, clarity of voice, ease of understanding my words in context to background noise, and, ease of listenability–you know, I am seeking opinions on which of the two mics makes the audio pleasant and not fatiguing.

The two videos are listed here:

Please leave a comment on your preference of one or the other mic, and why.

Audio is King. If the audio isn’t intelligible the video is useless. So, the Headset mounted Microphone will always sound better if it is of good quality, with a blast filter and wind noise suppression AND is positioned properly. A lapel mike will usually always sound muffled as it will always be off axis to the mouth and therefore loses high freq speech characteristics.

  • Thank you for the pointers, Roy. In the case of these two videos, did you find that the headset-mounted mic lived up to this behavior? It seems to me that most people who have listened to both videos come away with the impression that, indeed, the headset mic wins out in terms of clarity.

I obtained a different headset mic, today. I will be uploading that video, soon. I think this new mic will prove most effective.

While both were intelligible, I thought the boom mic was a little clearer.

  • Thank you, Howard, for the feedback. I concur.

Headset mic sounds best – lapel mic can pick up scratchy noises from clothing movement, but I heard very little in this test. Also, tonal quality is better and volume is as well. The headset mic used in the NCIS comments sounded best to me going back and forth between them. Not really very much difference, but barely noticeable. So I suppose it matters most which one is more comfortable for you?

My perspective on the boom versus lapel mike comparison in your video.
-The Boom mike wins hands down.
-Sound level remains the same when you turn your head – lapel mike doesn’t like left turns. Audio output increases when your head turns right.
-Boom mike doesn’t waste power on unnecessary base.
-Lapel mike picks up clothes rustle, boom mike does not.
-Overall audio clarity of boom mike is preferred;I would expect more success in weak signal conditions when using the boom mike.
Don’t let the mike cable get tangled in the steering!
